RE: Water in the Campgrounds

A 'regular' filter, like a Brita, will not filter bacteria. It simply removes unpleasant taste to varying degrees. We've never had a problem with water and camping for 30 years. As others have posted, be sure your own rig has been sanitized. You're more likely to grown your own bacteria in your own water tank then pick it up at a campground. Need to chlorinate your holding tank and fixtures at beginning of every season.

RE: Movies: Feast or Famine

Never go to movies. Use Netflix and watch films as often as I like.....

RE: Starting out

You may want to contact moderator and have your question moved to "Full Time Rving" forum. I have seen a lot of postings over the years about the "do's and don'ts" of full-timing, people who love it, people who after a year or two of it are sorry they sold their home, etc. You'll get a lot of 'been there, done that' info on that forum...

RE: where to find a pantry for a pop up

Lot of options here. We went for one of those sterlite containers with drawers. We have the 3-drawer container (it's all plastic). We put that on the far side of the dinette table and keep all the tableware, cookware, most used food items (such as coffee and pancake mix) in it. It is stored in PUP (on side) when traveling. We didn't want to drill into PUP and wanted something substantial to hold a fair amount of weight, so we went with this option. They sell these at all big box stores and places where other plastic bins are sold.

RE: Doom and Gloom!

Well, where are the sceptics now? Call me a sceptic if you like but I believe if you open your eyes the economy is just fine. Dow Jones is not the economy. True, Dow is not the economy. But banks ARE failing, unemployment IS rising (monthly, jobs are lost since beginning of year), European economies are taking a hit, ever increasing numbers of people are working only part time and often at jobs paying less than their previous one(but not unemployed, so not counted in figures), gasoline is up, food is up (way beyond historical inflation), we have a huge debt beyond anything in history, trillions of dollars in MBS's that still cannot be valued, etc. This is fine?

RE: brake lights

Not sure what kind of tailights you have, but I had this popular version on my PopUp. I'm glad you posted that! My year-old Jayco looked EXACTLY as yours. The bulb connector was corroded, almost from day 1 as I experienced problems the first year I had the pup (problems as the turn signal not working at times and I would have to 'jiggle it' to get it to work). I never thought to pull the bulb as I never thought it would corrode on a new unit --- it did. I'll take a look at your fix.

RE: Mortgage interest cutting programs

Nope. Just paid extra on the mortgage every month (contract allowed for early payoff) and paid off mortgage 5 years early and probably saved $40000 in interest. You don't need a 'special' program.

RE: weighted awning anchors

Fine if it worked for you. If you're not aware, they make stakes for sand that you'd have to get at a place that sells tents.

RE: Battery Question

..... I pan on using one Deep Cycle Marine Battery (Marine Cranking Amps: 875 - Cold Cranking:675 amps).....D Just want to second another poster --- you want a good deep cycle battery, not a marine. For your usage, 'cranking' is a totally useless number. That's for starting something. Your battery is going to be used to continually run something and a true deep cycle battery is made to be discharged (up to 50%) over and over. I use an inverter and deep cycle battery for 'dry camping'. I also have a solar panel for charging but of course, you need to be in a sunny place for that.

RE: 10 gallon external gray-water container

You're probably getting air locked --- I had the same problem. If you totally close the system (hoses attached at both ends and gray water container openings capped), water can't flow. It's the same thing as when you try to pour gas from a large container without opening the vent. There are various fixes. I 'cheated', for now, and simply drip the hose from the sink into the container without attaching to it. There are mods, and someone may post one, that show how to introduce air into the system.

RE: HELP US BUY OUR FIRST POP UP....please

Just joining the chorus. If you search on this topic, you'll find it's a constant question as to 'what to buy' and what brands have issues. It is generally accepted that quality is somewhat lacking on PUPs --- of course, some people have no problems, others have several, even with new units. So, as others stated, purchase based on layout and features. Imagine yourself spending a day inside the PUP. Do you like the layout of the dinette, do you want front storage, 2 dinettes, shower, slide out, etc. As a generalization, most people have responded to the question "if I could purchase again, what do I wish I had done" and the general answers were to purchase the largest PUP and have outside, front storage. So, go for a 12-foot box, all things being equal.

RE: Forest River (Rockwood and Flagstaff) Quality?

Almost everyone seems to have some issues with quality. I had things that didn't work immediately and fixed them after the first time out. Apparently everyone accepts that you have to fix 'some loose screws' or in my case, plumbing, in others, electrical. If it were an automobile, we'd be screaming bloody hell to the dealer, but with PUPs, we accept it. Having said that, I'm pretty happy with my Jayco. But this is my first PUP so I have nothing to compare to. I did go to RV shows and sit in all kinds of units with different manufacturers. The best advice I've seen on this forum is to purchase based on design rather than manufacturer. 1 or 2 dinettes, side or end dinette, slide out, front storage, storage, shower, ?????? Go and sit in these units for 10 minutes at a time and imagine yourself sitting in them on a rainy day, or every evening. Worry about if the unit is what you want to camp in then look at manufacturer and price.

RE: What is up with US Customs?

I got searched, as in XRAY, by Canada, at Portal. No problem coming back to the U.S. This just happened a couple of months ago. What surprised DW and myself is not the check (I have no objections), but they only checked what was inside the TV. I expected to have to 'pop up' --- they didn't ask for that. I carry as much, if not more gear, inside the PUP rather than the TV. I don't get it....:h

Anyone hitching/unhitching pups themselves?

I'm looking to possibly do some trips in the PUP without DW. However, like many (with DW, DH, kids, or significant other), she is the 'eyes' for the hitching process. I know there are products out there to assist in lining up to hook up. Anyone using these and hooking up by themselves? If so, any further tips or tricks to doing this?

Canada Government Question

I realize the monitors may put the nix on this question as it's not an RV-related, but I'll try. Wife and I were wondering (we travel to Canada a lot and read Canadian news and understand a lot of the political system) about representation. Does the Yukon Territory have representation in Parliament as the provinces do? Are there elected officials? I don't know what the status of 'territory' means in Canada --- I know there is a capital of the Yukon. That's it --- I don't want to start a political argument here that the moderators will turn off. Just want to know what the Yukon Territory actually is or is it nothing more than a geographical area of the Northwest Territories, or BC?

RE: Washington D.C.

Lake Fairfax county park. I don't have a big rig, but most of the sites were used by big rigs. We spent 2 weeks there this spring. This is a nice park, in a nice area. We commuted to Dunn-Loring metro station every day to go into DC. However, no water hookups, if that is important to you. Electric only. http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/lakefairfax/fairfaxcamp/

I have one, bu don't know how it compares. If there is a difference, how much can there be? A couple of inches at best?

RE: Washington D.C.

As another poster mentioned, Lake Fairfax (this is a county park). We stayed there for almost two weeks this Spring. We drove and parked at the Dunn-Loring metro stop and took the metro into DC. No one drives in DC --- the metro goes everywhere. If you're not familiar with DC (we've been going there for years), please PM me and I can provide you with links to info about parking, taking metro --- there are multi-day and weeklong passes with unlimited rides that are really good deals.

RE: Camping: The Cause Of Many Social "Conditions"

You all need to stay home and live in a shell. You forget, campgrounds are PUBLIC places, not yours specifically once you RENT a site. You want quiet, privacy, no kids, no dogs, buy a piece of land in the woods and go there by yourselves. Get a life for crying out loud. True, they're public places. But that is no excuse for not being considerate. I have worked out in gyms for decades. They are public places. But there is gym etiquette (putting weights away, keeping your distance from other people lifting, not congregating with your friends, etc.). Same true in cg's. Basic etiquette not to go through someone's site, to keep noise level down, keep your site clean and cleaned up when you leave, and have quiet dogs. This is just basic consideration and manners. Not rocket science, not difficult.
